1. Stop buying convenience foods: I know this is not the first time I've said this (nor will it be the last). By making your own mixes and foods, you can provide healthy meals cheaply. You don't have to worry about what's in the mixes b/c you already know.
2. Build your own compost: Use an opaque Rubbermaid tote to make a compost bin. Drill about 20-30 1/8 inch holes in both the bottom and the lid. Add wet bedding (e.g. paper, leaves, etc...) Place your food scraps (remember no oil, meats, or dairy) Fill with dry bedding. This end result will be rich fertilizer, which leads me to my next suggestion...
3. Make your own garden: Whether it is herbs, vegetable, or whatever, just do it! It's amazing how much better the fruits of our own labor taste.
4. Bring your own grocery bags: I admit mine often get left at home; however, if that is the case...I suggest paper bags, which you can compost or really do we need a bag for a few items we can carry
5. Switch to CFL lightbulbs: this too me is the easiest. I have used them for years and it doesn't take much effort, but saves you money
6. Give green parties: Buy re-usable cups/dishes and keep them for each event. Buy classes (cooking, exercise, etc..) instead of more things that people do not need
7. Use re-usable hand clothes/cleaning towels instead of paper towels.
8. Make your own cleaning products: it's amazing how many uses borax and baking soda have.
9. Consignment shops/garage sales
10. Crop Share Assistance: Support your local farmer-this is my favorite and it really saves you money on produce (and some even eggs, dairy, meats, and beauty products). Some even provide monthly events for the family. Check out locations in your area at www.localharvest.org
